❶In addition to these five texts, I will conduct research using a survey of randomly selected college students to determine A. The proposal should situate the work in the literature, it should show why this is an if not the most important question to answer in the field, and convince your committee the skeptical readers that they are that your approach will in fact result in an answer to the question.

You may also include the expected outcome of your research in this section. However, it bears repeating that you should leave room for flexibility if it turns out that your research led to a different outcome than you expected. If you have already begun to look at potential sources for your research, you may conclude your research proposal with a bibliography or an annotated bibliography. This will give your advisor a good idea of the materials you plan to use and can help them steer you in the right direction if there are any issues with the research materials that you have chosen.

However, environmental concerns are still largely underrepresented in most contemporary literature. I propose a detailed analysis of environment and environmental issues in five selected texts. Because I am focusing primarily on environmentally conscious literature as a contemporary movement, these will all be texts written within the past decade.

In addition to these five texts, I will conduct research using a survey of randomly selected college students to determine A. Whether they have read any of the five texts, B. The amount of contemporary literature that they have read in the past year and C. Whether they felt that environment or environmental issues were addressed in said literature. I will also be conducting research on the efficacy of literature to spur social awareness and movements as a whole, with a particular focus on feminism.

If literature can be proven to have played a strong role in driving social awareness of this issue in the past, it could potentially prove that literature would be similarly effective in driving up awareness of environmental concerns. As of yet, there is still a large gap in the literary canon when it comes to explicitly environmental texts, and little research examining the effect of socially driven literature on public attitudes toward environmentalism.

This sample is a very basic version of a research proposal. The one that you need to write may be much more complex depending on your area of study. Additionally, a research proposal has to present a list of annotated bibliography describing the main significance of each source for the paper and advisably a list of further sources which you intend to use in addition to the main literature.

Topic of the research paper: These aforementioned reasons and the overall need to develop human rights protection, to update current legislation and to revise national population policies have given me incentives to discuss the human rights issues in my research paper. In this section I presented the topic and the main reasons for choosing this topic. Sometimes it might not be required by the university or college or a professor of the subject matter to reason your choice of topic to such extent but simply state it in one sentence.

However, it is always advisable to state the rationale of the topic and explain why it is necessary to examine the chosen issues. It demonstrates your capacity for critical analysis and your ability of independent academic research. Even more, it provides the evidence that you have not made your choice of topic randomly but you are genuinely interested in the subject and consulted various different sources and studied about the main problems or questions in the field of research.

For the overall writing process you might find it extremely useful to formulate the reasons of your topic choice for yourself as it helps you to clarify the focus of your research, define your thesis and makes the writing much easier. I seek to answer the question whether current population policies and legislation are effective, adequate and sufficient towards promotion and protection of human rights.

In the first part of the paper I give an overview of historical background from socialist to post-independence multi-ethnic societies by analysing the impact of the collapse of the USSR. Further I discuss the establishment of human rights legislation and the reasons behind the performed political choices. The explanation for the current human rights situation has its roots obviously in the history and in Soviet era. In the second part of the research paper I analyse the main issues and difficulties with the situation of national minorities in the Baltic States and respective legal frameworks.

One of the main difficulties with the situation of minorities seems to be the insufficient integration. Internal and international security issues in relation to the protection of minority rights are being discussed as well.

In the third part I seek to find solutions for improving the protection of human rights in the Baltic States and particularly the update of legislation concerning ethnic minorities. There is a need to develop and implement legal framework to stimulate the protection of human rights. In the abstract all proposals are very similar. They need to show a reasonably informed reader why a particular topic is important to address and how you will do it.

To that end, a proposal needs to show how your work fits into what is already known about the topic and what new contribution your work will make. Specify the question that your research will answer, establish why it is a significant question, show how you are going to answer the question, and indicate what you expect we will learn. The proposal should situate the work in the literature, it should show why this is an if not the most important question to answer in the field, and convince your committee the skeptical readers that they are that your approach will in fact result in an answer to the question.

Theses which address research questions that can be answered by making plan-able observations and applying hypothesis testing or model selection techniques are preferred and perhaps the easiest to write.

Because they address well-bounded topics, they can be very tight, but they do require more planning on the front end. Theses which are largely based on synthesis of observations, rumination, speculation, and opinion formation are harder to write, and usually not as convincing, often because they address questions which are not well-bounded and essentially unanswerable.

One 'old saw' about research in the social sciences is that the finding is always: Try to avoid such insight-less findings; finding "who do and who don't" is better. One problem with this type of project is that it is often impossible to tell when you are "done".

Another problem is that the nature of argument for a position rather than the reasoned rejection of alternatives to it encourages shepherding a favored notion rather than converging more directly toward a truth. See Chamberlain's and Platt's articles.

A good proposal helps one see and avoid these problems. Literature review-based theses involve collection of information from the literature, distillation of it, and coming up with new insight on an issue. One problem with this type of research is that you might find the perfect succinct answer to your question on the night before or after you turn in the final draft in someone else's work. This certainly can knock the wind out of your sails.

But note that even a straight-ahead science thesis can have the problem of discovering, late in the game, that the work you have done or are doing has already been done; this is where familiarity with the relevant literature by both yourself and your committee members is important. A Couple of Models for Proposals A Two Page Preliminary Proposal Model Here is a model for a very brief maybe five paragraph proposal that you might use to interest faculty in sitting on your committee.

People who are not yet hooked may especially appreciate its brevity. In the first paragraph, the first sentence identifies the general topic area. The second sentence gives the research question, and the third sentence establishes its significance. The next couple of paragraphs gives the larger historical perspective on the topic. Essentially list the major schools of thought on the topic and very briefly review the literature in the area with its major findings.

Who has written on the topic and what have they found? Allocate about a sentence per important person or finding. Include any preliminary findings you have, and indicate what open questions are left.
